chapter 12 - "On the threshold of life they faced an abyss of death...."

By the time fall arrives Paul is the last of the 7 friends in his class. He hopes an armistice will finally bring peace at last. Paul is currently resting for 2 weeks because he had swallowed some gas and believes over the following years no one will remember what good soldiers had to go through to fight for their country. He also believes the war is far from over and before any kind armistice is made there will be a revolution. In my opinion this chapter was very emotional but at the same time brought the entire book together. If i had to take a guess at the tone it would be peaceful because to me he doesn't sound angry or sad and certainly not happy i just picture this chapter of being him in a hospital thinking to himself about everything that had just happened and knowing he has to go back. The way this book ends it defiantly feels like there should be a second one, i'm not sure if there is one or not but the war doesn't seem to be over yet.

  1. First I'd just like to say that I like your title! But I agree on the tone part, it's definitely peaceful, like there's no loud, scary war going on, it's just Paul thinking to himself. I agree that it ended kind of abruptly, but I don't think there will be a second book since Paul's kinda dead... But I can see how you think it doesn't seem like it's over.

  2. I see what your saying. How it would be hard to make a second book if the main character died. But what I was thinking was if they made a second one they could have a new main character. This main character would have no relation to Paul what so ever besides having fought in a war. The new main character would have a great story in the war just as Paul except they would win the war for good and the new main character would go to a grave yard that was dedicated to all the soldiers who fought in his same war at the end of the book and he would see Paul baumers gravestone. I think it would
    Be a cool connection.

  3. Dear Piggy, I like your view on the end of the book. It was very insightful. I agree that there should be a second book. Paul just dies, peacefully. He died when he shouldn't of, and if he lived longer, he would of lived to see the armistice.

  4. This was a really insightful post Joey, I liked kind of agree/disagree with your thoughts on a second book however. With Paul being dead, who would it follow? And the book was half about the war, and half about Paul and who he was during the war- and how it affected him. So even though the war isn't over, Paul's life is.
